The never ending passion
As you perhaps are aware, it’s in Northern Portugal where it’s concentrated the majority of our shoe industry, and even though we’ve many international brands, shoes Made in Portugal will always have a special place in our hearts. And it’s in São João da Madeira that a big percentage of companies gather thus becoming Portugal’s shoe capital! In fact, since 1483 it’s in this city, where manufacturing shoes has a traditional knowledge foundation, that the Shoe Museum’s born. The first shoe factory, “Sapataria da Moda” (transl. Fashion Shoe Store), crops up in 1833 headed by Gaspar de Almeida Pinho and later in 1905 another one crops up belonging to Vitorino Tavares. And it’s like that little by little that the shoe industry has developed until we reach today when there are numerous companies not only of shoes but also of components to making them, thus making this beautiful town the Shoe Capital, name given by the National Institute of Trademarks Registration.
And now you wonder… What can I learn and make in this museum? Well, not only does it tell the footwear history throughout time but you also get to know life stories dedicated to shoes and stories of shoes that made an impact. This space intends to present in a different and innovative way the history of making shoes from the workshop, in its most traditional concept, to the big factories where there’s industrial production.
You can also get to know shoes made by big-name designers from around the world and many national and international art works that were inspired by this object. It’s amazing, right?
The best of all is that you can see not only this amazing evolution of shoes but also temporary exhibits, like the one by Kobi Levi or Anastasia Radevich, creators of the masterpieces/shoes that you can see in the pictures above.
